As they already owned Gibson, this merge brought the two powerful brand names under one umbrella. In 1957, the Chicago Musical Instrument Company (CMI) acquired Epiphone. They grew in popularity and by the 1950’s, became Gibson’s main rival. In the 1930’s, they switched up their business model and began producing high-end guitars, and became the only manufacturer to successfully make the transition. I can't wait for Martin to finish it, and I look forward to being able to pick it up at the factory. To understand the significance of the Epiphone serial number, we first need to look at how their company historyintertwines with that of Gibson.Įpiphone started as a family business in 1873 as a luxury banjo manufacturer. It sounded wonderful, but the high action and low saddle meant it needed a neck reset. I also have a '75 D-12-41 (only 46 ever made) that is being worked on at the Martin factory. I had played the DF and MK elsewhere and was very impressed by both, so I'm thinking it's something about Sam Ash's room. It made me think Sam Ash has the ability to drain the life-force out of a beautiful guitar like these limited editions. They all sounded dead, in spite of them having fairly young strings. I visited Sam Ash in Manhattan, and tried out several 40-series Limited Editions (Dan Fogelberg, Mark Knopfler, Peter Rowan, Don McLean). Some guitars may be challenged by their environment. I feel they should all open up, although some may "blossom" a little faster. I have also played some new ones that felt a little stiff, but I usually didn't have trouble finding a good new one hanging on some store's wall. It is a real lap piano, and it loves 80/20 strings. It has a wonderful, open, sunny tone with a lot of sustain.

I purchased my D-41 over a year ago from a friend who was its original owner.
